Just as with so many other criminal justice policies, pretrial detention disproportionately affects African American men and women, destabilizing black families in the process.

Matthew Larson is an assistant professor in the department of criminal justice at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. His research broadly focuses on life-course criminology, violence, incarceration, and the intersection of mental health/illness and criminal justice policy. Beyond research, he’s currently an instructor for the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program and co-organizer of Just Poetry, an annual event that brings together individuals from diverse perspectives and experiences to explore “justice” through poetry/spoken word.
